What Is a Certificate of Analysis (CoA)?

A Certificate of Analysis (CoA) is a document a supplier issues for a specific batch or lot of material — a raw material, an intermediate, an API — listing the tests performed and the actual results, and confirming the batch meets its agreed specification. It's the paper (or PDF) evidence behind "this specific batch is what we said it is."

The gap that trips manufacturers up isn't usually the CoA itself — it's what happens after it arrives. A CoA needs to be checked against the material's actual spec range, tied to a supplier who's currently qualified (qualifications lapse), and confirmed as not expired, before the batch it covers gets used in production. That check is a discrete step, and when nobody owns it explicitly, it tends not to happen consistently.
