A Video Editor for Journalists That Protects Your Sources

Interview footage, leaked clips and on-the-ground recordings can put a source at risk the moment they hit someone else's server. Plumely edits, verifies, captions and reframes video entirely in your browser — there is no upload, so source material stays with you.

Everything runs on your device. Your videos are never uploaded — there's no server to upload to.

Best in Chrome & Edge on desktop.

Source footage is never uploaded

Plumely processes video locally using your browser's engine. There is no upload endpoint and no cloud round-trip, so a sensitive recording isn't transmitted to or stored on a third-party server you don't control. In an era where a subpoena or a breach can expose a source, keeping the file off every server that isn't yours is the whole point.

No vendor in the chain

Because nothing leaves your device, no editing vendor sees your material, retains a copy, or can be compelled to produce it. The file lives only on the machine you opened it on — there's no third party to serve.

Inspect and verify footage

Step through footage frame by frame to check for signs of manipulation, scrub to a specific moment to confirm a detail, and compare cuts side by side. Because playback is local, there's no compression round-trip degrading what you're examining before you've made a judgment about it.

Turn raw footage into a publishable clip

  • Trim a long interview down to the usable quote
  • Add word-level captions for clips and for on-screen verification
  • Reduce noise and level rough field audio so it's intelligible
  • Reframe horizontal footage to vertical for social distribution
  • Cover or blur a face to protect an identity before publishing

A note on metadata

Protecting a source is about more than the pixels. Remember that the original camera file can carry metadata (location, device, timestamps); when you export from Plumely you get a newly encoded file, but you should still verify what any file you publish or share actually contains before it leaves your hands.

Works offline, in the field

Installed as an app, the editor and its engine are cached — so you can cut footage on a laptop with no connection, on assignment, or on a deliberately air-gapped machine.

Clean export, straight to the desk

Export a clean MP4 with no watermark — ready to drop into your CMS, hand to the desk, or post directly. No account, no branding, no wait.

FAQ

Is my footage uploaded anywhere?+

No. There is no upload endpoint — editing and export happen in your browser on your device. You can verify it in the network tab: 0 bytes uploaded.

Could a vendor be compelled to produce my source material?+

Not from Plumely — we never receive your footage, so there is nothing on our side to produce. It stays entirely on your device.

Does the export strip identifying metadata?+

Exporting produces a newly encoded file rather than a copy of your original, but you should always verify the actual contents of any file before publishing or sharing it, rather than assuming a tool has removed everything.

Can I blur a face or protect an identity?+

Yes — you can cover or blur a region of the frame and mute audio segments, then confirm the result in the exported file before it goes out.

Is there a watermark on exports?+

No — exports are clean MP4 with no branding.

Do I need an account?+

No sign-up is required to edit or export.
