What Is a Pipeline Stage?
A pipeline stage is one step in a defined, ordered sequence that every opportunity moves through as a deal progresses — a common default sequence runs qualification, needs analysis, proposal, negotiation, and then one of two closed outcomes, closed-won or closed-lost. Every open opportunity sits in exactly one stage at a time.
Stages exist so a sales team (and its managers) can see where every deal actually stands without asking each rep individually, and so pipeline reporting — how many deals are in proposal, what's the average time spent in negotiation — reflects reality instead of a spreadsheet updated whenever someone remembers to. A stage change is also a natural trigger point for follow-up automation, e.g. notifying a deal's owner or creating a task the moment an opportunity reaches a particular stage.
